Jakub Kwasny Sets New CAA Mark in 100 Fly at CAA Championships

HAMPTON, Va. – Jakub Kwasny captured gold in the 100 fly and teamed with Nathan Piccolo, Alasdair Bell and Sebastian Smith as Drexel men's swimming and diving won three medals Friday night the CAA Swimming and Diving Championships. Smith also won silver in the 100 fly.
The Dragons kicked off the night finishing one-two in the 100 fly. After finishing the preliminary with a time of 46.77, Kwasny set a program and CAA Championship record on his way to a gold. Kwasny hit the wall with a time of 45.61, breaking his 2023 record at the CAA Championships of 46.29. Smith finished just behind with a time of 46.01, winning silver.
Both Kwasny and Smith would come back later in the night to win silver in the 200 relay free, teaming with Piccolo and Bell. The Dragons closed the night out touching the wall at 1:19.38, just 0.15 seconds behind first.
In the 400 IM, Alessio Gianni clinched a spot in the A Final Race. Gianni finished second in his preliminary race, and went on to a fourth place finish in finals, hitting the wall with a time of 3:52.59. Gianni also placed fifth in the 200 free with a time of 1:37.58.
Kacper Karnik punched his ticket to the 100 breast final. Karnik won his preliminary race, touching the wall at 53.57. In the finals, Karnik finished fifth, just shy of his preliminary time, 53.89.
Dimi Gkelis was next for the Dragons. The freshman had an impressive performance in the 100 back, winning his preliminary race with a time of 48.21. In the final, Gkelis finished with a personal best time of 47.95, earning a fifth place finish.
Jack Patton also placed for the Dragons in the 3-meter diving. Patton scored a 246.30 which earned him a sixth place finish.
The Dragons return to the Hampton Aquaplex on Saturday for the final night of the CAA Championships. The fourth night of competition features the 1650 Free, 200 Back, 100 Free, 200 Breast, 200 Fly, Women's 1m Diving and 400 Free Relay. Prelims begin at 10 a.m. The finals will kick off at 6 p.m. The entirety of the 2024 CAA Swimming and Diving Championships, including preliminaries, will be streamed on FloSwimming.
