PENNSAUKEN, N.J. - Dragons show strength in numbers at the 85th Dad Vail Regatta with four grand final appearances, a bronze medal in the 2nd Varsity 4+ and a gold medal in the Varsity 8+. Together with the men's team, Drexel Rowing was awarded the overall team points trophy for their respective performances throughout the regatta.
The weekend started off with all boats competing in time trials on Friday. Women's 2nd Varsity 4+ placed 3rd in their time trial in a time of 9:54 behind Georgetown and Wisconsin. Women's 2nd Varsity 8+ placed 2nd in their time trial in a time of 8:06 behind Georgetown. Women's Varsity 4+ placed 5th in their time trial (out of 13 boats) in a time of 8:45. The Women's Varsity 8+ placed second in their time trial in a time of 7:07 behind Fordham University (7:02). All four boats qualified for the semifinals and ultimately the grand finals.
Varsity 8+ started Saturday with an impressive showing in the semi-final, winning the second semifinal by 10 seconds over second place Embry-Riddle in 7:07.1. The Dragons posted the second fastest time of the semifinals (7:07), with Georgetown University having the fastest time (7:03). Starting in the middle lane for the grand final, the Dragons charged early and held onto the lead over Fordham and Georgetown. The Dragons crossed the line in a time of 6:54, putting them first across the line.
2nd Varsity 4+ had a strong performance in their semifinal finishing second in a time of 8:57, eight seconds behind second-place Wisconsin. Later that day, the Dragons fought hard to the finish, crossing the line in third place in a time of 8:27 behind Wisconsin and Georgetown, earning a bronze medal in the event.
Varsity 4+ raced hard to a second-place finish in their semifinal, posting a time of 8:41, 15 seconds off of Wisconsin and three seconds ahead of Georgetown. In the grand final, the Varsity 4+ finished fifh in a time of 8:20.
2nd Varsity 8+ went straight from a time trial into the grand final. The Dragons finished third behind Georgetown and Fordham, respectively in a time of 7:23.
"This was a full team effort," Drexel Head Women's Rowing Coach Katie Lane said. "Being a Philly school competing at Dad Vail, there's an expectation to uphold and I'm thrilled that we were able to meet it, and exceed it."
The Drexel Women's Rowing Team unfortunately isn't a consistent participant at Dad Vail because of the changing schedule and the conflict with NCAA Conference Championships. This is the first time that the team has been back to the event since 2021. This year, in 2024, the women's team was able to compete in the Dad Vail Regatta without conflict of the CAA Conference Championships.
"I think being able to race in both the Dad Vail Regatta and our conference championship can only help us, not hurt us. It gives us the opportunity to see other competitors that we otherwise wouldn't see throughout our season. And the fact that we can do it all in our backyard, on a course that's so familiar to us is awesome."
The Dragons will continue their spring campaign next weekend back on the Cooper River for the CAA Conference Championships on May 17th and May 18th.
