WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - Daryn Conner scored her first goal of the season as Drexel women's soccer (2-4-2, 1-0-1) drew with Monmouth (4-1-4, 0-0-1) in West Long Branch, New Jersey, 2-2. The Hawks were voted the top seed in the CAA Preseason Poll this season.
The Dragons got the game started hot. Conner scored thanks to the assist from Elise Duffy at just the 4:14 mark, the quickest goal from a Dragon this season. The Furlong, Pa. native tossed up the pass that squeezed in between two Hawk's defenders. Conner put away the shot with the right boot to give DU the early lead, 1-0.
A miscue from Monmouth in the 11th minute led to an own-goal, giving Drexel the 2-0 lead. This was the first time the Dragons had added two or more strikes in the first half this season.
The Hawks finally got on the board in the half's final minutes. In the 40th minute, Lindsay Husic pushed the ball into the box to Ari Keily. Keily dished the pass to a crashing Emily De Almeida who put away the tally off her right thigh to cut the lead down to just one.
The only goal in the second half came from Monmouth's Liza Suydam. Suydam found space around the Dragon defender, and fired from the 18 to hit the upper left corner of the net to tie the game at two.
Joella Chase made her third start of the season, collecting six saves after a seven-save performance against the defending CAA Champions, Towson.
The Dragons return home for a non-conference battle with NJIT on Thursday, September 26. Kick-off is set for 6 p.m.
