9/27/2024 6:53:00 PM | Field Hockey
PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel field hockey team earned their third straight victory Friday afternoon, defeating No. 20 Monmouth 2-1 to move to 2-0 in conference play. This marks the Dragon's third consecutive season with a victory over a ranked opponent (defeated No. 20 UAlbany 4-3 in 2023 and No. 20 William & Mary 1-0 in 2022).
Both teams had a competitive first half, going into halftime with no score for either squad. After her first shot was saved, Pien Elsen got her rebound and stuck it behind Monmouth's goalie to give Drexel a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute.
It only took two minutes for the Dragons to add to their lead as Anna Castaldo made a beautiful move into the circle and put Drexel up 2-0.
Monmouth would not go away without a fight as they got on the board in the fourth quarter. Sofia Fouces hit the back of the net in the 49th minute to cut the DU lead down to just one. Excellent defense from the Dragons help secure the win over the ranked foe, handing the Hawks their first conference loss of the season.
