Drexel Takes Down No. 23 Cal Poly and No. 25 CSU Bakersfield; Finish 2-1 Overall at National Duals

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The Drexel wrestling team took down two nationally ranked teams at the NWCA Mid-Major National Duals Friday at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls, Iowa. After falling to Wyoming, 20-18, in the first round, the Dragons defeated No. 25 CSU Bakersfield, 33-9, and No. 23 Cal Poly, 23-16. This is the Dragons first victory over a ranked opponent since DU slammed No. 20 Purdue in December of 2022.
Desmond Pleasant recorded a team-best three victories, including a win over Cal Poly's No. 30 Koda Holeman. Jordan Soriano picked up a pair of victories, collecting a pin over Wyoming's No. 30 Cole Brooks. Kyle Waterman and Jasiah Queen also finished undefeated.
Against Wyoming
The Dragons opened the first bout of the day with an early 14-0 lead over Wyoming. Pleasant and Waterman started with impressive major decision wins. Soriano collected his second pin in dual competition this season, earning the fall in the last 30 seconds of the second period.No. 22 Gabe Willochell and No. 18 Jared Hill got the Cowboys back on track, cutting the lead in half to 14-7. Cooper Voorhees followed up with a hard fought decision win over Cody Walsh. Queen made his dual debut this season in dominant fashion, taking the 15-5 majority win. Drexel was unable to keep the lead as Wyoming scored 10 straight victories on the way to a 20-18 win.

Drexel jumped out to another early lead in the first three matches. Pleasant recorded his second of two wins of the night, taking the 4-1 decision win. Kyle Waterman got a fall in the final second of the first period over Santino Sanchez. The Roadrunners forfeited 141 pounds, giving Drexel the 15-0 lead. Dom Findora added four more points after blanking Steve Caday, 8-0. Luke Nichter picked up a pin in the first period, taking down Jose Farias. Jasiah Queen stayed hot, earning another impressive technical fall victory. Giuseppe Hoose made a late comeback at 184 pounds, getting the takedown in the final 30 seconds to take a 11-10 decision win. Ibrahim Ameer made his 2024-25 debut, taking on No. 1 AJ Ferarri. Ameer put up a fight, earning an early takedown, but fell 10-4.
