
Dragons Overcome Double-Digit Deficit to Defeat Charleston 58-56

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel women's basketball team erased a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter to defeat the Charleston Cougars on Friday night at the Daskalakis Athletic Center, 58-56. The Dragon's held the CAA's hottest offense to 28 percent from the floor, while Drexel (8-8, 4-2) shot 42.6 percent.
BY THE NUMBERS
Amaris Baker scored 19 points on 7-for-16 shooting and converting on a pair of long range shots. The senior also went 3-for-6 from the free throw line.
Cara McCormack went 5-for-9 and 3-for-6 from long range in her 13-point performance. The graduate student also grabbed four rebounds and dished four assists in the effort.
Chloe Hodges finished with five points, five rebounds and six assists in the effort. Hodges also picked up two steals on the night.
The Dragons held Charleston, who usually shoots 30.5 percent from deep, to just 2-for-23.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dragons began the game on an 8-2 run in the first four minutes. A transition layup by Deja Evans led Charleston to its first called timeout of the game. Out of the timeout, Charleston found its way back into the contest, trimming the Drexel lead to five at the end of the first quarter. The Dragons shot a 7-for-13 clip from the field, while Charleston only made three of 14 attempts. The Cougars were perfect from the charity stripe, shooting 4-for-4.
The Cougars outscored the Dragons in the second quarter, 9-7. Charleston went 4-for-18 from the field and went 0-for-9 from long range. Offensively, Drexel received a trey from McCormack to help sustain the lead heading into the locker room. The score at half was in favor of Drexel, 23-20
Charleston took a one-point lead in the third frame after outscoring Drexel, 14-10. The Cougars took their first lead of the game with 30 seconds remaining to cap a 6-point run. The score after three quarters was 34-33.

The Cougars missed their attempt and Drexel came down with the rebound. With 12.3 seconds left, Charleston fouled twice to send Baker to the free throw line. Baker converted one-of-two tries, pushing Drexel's lead to four. Charleston called its last timeout with 10 seconds remaining. Out of the timeout, the Cougars drew an and-one and completed the three-point play to make it a one point game again with five seconds left. Baker was fouled once more. The senior made one of the two chances to put Drexel ahead by two. With the clock expiring, Charleston took a shot but could not find the bottom of the bucket. Drexel finished the quarter outscoring Charleston 25-22.
