Women's Basketball Routs Elon, 64-37

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel women's basketball team defeated the Elon Phoenix, 64-37 on Sunday afternoon at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. Chloe Hodges completed her second double-double of her career as Drexel improved to 9-8 overall and 5-2 in conference play. Elon fell to 11-7 overall and 5-2 in conference play.
BY THE NUMBERS
Hodges scored 11 points and tallied 10 assists in her first double-double of the season. Hodges also corralled four rebounds and picked up four steals.
Amaris Baker tallied 24 points on a 10-for-18 mark. The senior went 2-for-4 from long range, grabbed four rebounds and dished two assists. The conference's leading scorer has now scored north of 10 points in 13 straight games.
Cara McCormack finished Sunday's contest with 10 points on 4-for-8 shooting. The graduate student grabbed three rebounds and two assists.
Grace O'Neill finished with a season-high 12 rebounds and tied a career-high five assists.
The Dragons held Elon to just 10-for-55 shooting. The Phoenix had a pair of players reach nine points, but no one reached double digits. This weekend, Drexel's opponents only shot 27-for-114 and 6-for-45 from deep.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Drexel opened the game shooting 4-for-8 in the first five minutes of the game. McCormack was responsible for seven of Drexel's nine points in the opening minutes. The Dragons closed the quarter with a 12-point run to take a double-digit lead into the second quarter. Drexel led the Phoenix after one quarter, 16-6.
The Dragons extended their lead in the second quarter five-point run. The Phoenix called an early timeout with 7:43 remaining after going scoreless for over 10 minutes. The Phoenix scored a pair of free throws with 7:11 remaining to break their scoreless streak. The Phoenix offense struggled to score a bucket in the second quarter, scoring their only field goal to end the quarter. In the first half, Elon shot 3-for-26. All three shots were 3-pointers. At the end of the first half, Drexel led Elon, 34-13.
Drexel outscored Elon in the third frame 14-9, extending its lead to 26 points. Hodges and Deja Evans each scored five points. Elon's shooting woes continued in the third frame, shooting 4-for-17 and 1-for-6 from deep.
Drexel's defense shined again in the fourth quarter, holding Elon to just 3-for-12. Baker led the Dragons with 11 points on a perfect 5-for-5 shooting. The senior was also successful from beyond the arc once.
WHAT'S NEXT
Drexel travels to Boston to play the Northeastern Huskies at 3 p.m. on Friday, January 31. The Dragons return to Philadelphia to host the Towson Tigers at 2 p.m. in the DAC on Sunday, February 2.
