
Dragons Outlast Northeastern, 53-47

BOSTON, Mass. – The Drexel women's basketball team outlasted the Northeastern Huskies in Boston, Mass., on Friday afternoon, 53-47. Drexel improves to 10-8 overall and 6-2 in conference play.
BY THE NUMBERS
Amaris Baker scored 16 points on 7-for-16 shooting. The senior also corralled a team-high eight rebounds and dished a team-high three assists. It is the second time this season that Baker has led in points, rebounds and assists.
Deja Evans scored 12 points and collected five rebounds.
Cara McCormack and Laine McGurk each scored 10 points in the effort. McGurk added four rebounds and two assists to her stat sheet.
It is the first time four Dragons scored 10 points or more since Drexel's CAA Tournament game against Monmouth on March 15, 2024.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Northeastern outscored Drexel in the first quarter, 15-9. The Huskies shot 60 percent and hit a trey to take a six-point lead on Drexel, who shot 4-for-15 in the first frame. Baker paced the Dragons with five points and led with two rebounds and two assists.
The Dragons opened the second quarter scoring eight straight points in the paint and holding the Huskies scoreless. With 6:56 remaining in the frame, a fastbreak, led by Laine McGurk ended with an Evans layup to give Drexel its first lead of the game. The Huskies took the lead on a three to beat the shot clock with 33 seconds remaining. Northeastern led the Dragons 25-24 at halftime.
The third quarter was all Drexel. The Dragons outscored the Huskies 18-9, behind nine points from Baker and six from Laine McGurk. The Dragons shot 8-for-16 from the field and held NEU to just four field goals.
A three-pointer by Cara McCormack put Drexel ahead by seven, 47-40, to begin the fourth quarter. However, Northeastern pulled within two points with a minute left. With 32 seconds remaining, Drexel had a chance on the basket but it was unsuccessful. The Dragons grabbed the rebound and called a 30-second timeout. Out of the timeout, Drexel put the ball in Evans' hands. The sophomore hit a turnaround-hook to beat the shot clock. Northeastern turned the ball over with 21 seconds remaining. Molly Lavin was sent to the line for two free throws and converted on both tries. With 15 seconds remaining, Northeastern advanced the ball with a timeout and was fouled. NEU went 0-for-2 from the line, but retained possession. The Huskies were unable to get another shot off as the game clock expired.
