Dragons Open CAA Play With Win Against Delaware, 65-59

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel women's basketball team defeated the Delaware Blue Hens, 65-59, on Friday night in UD's final appearance in the Daskalakis Athletic Center as a CAA opponent. With the win, Drexel begins conference play with a 1-0 record in the CAA and climb to 5-6 overall, while Delaware falls to 3-8 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
BY THE NUMBERS
Cara McCormack led the Dragons in scoring after shooting 4-for-9 from the field and knocking down three treys.
Grace O'Neill contributed 11 points on 4-for-5 shooting. The junior also grabbed three rebounds and dished three assists.
Amaris Baker finished the game with 12 points and tied a season-high six rebounds.
All seven Drexel players who saw minutes in the game tallied at least three points.
Due to an administrative technical foul to begin the game, Drexel truly led wire-to-wire, holding the lead for the full 40 minutes and not once were the two teams tied.
Drexel pushed its winning streak against Delaware to six straight games. It is tied with the second longest streak against the Blue Hens in program history.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The game opened with an administrative technical foul for Delaware, which resulted in two free throws for Baker. After starting the quarter with two points, Drexel launched into a 24-point quarter on 8-for-14 shooting and a 5-for-9 mark from long range. On the other end, Delaware scored 15 points on 6-for-12 shooting. Six of the seven Dragons who played in the quarter tallied at least three points. O'Neill shot 2-for-2 from long range and led the Dragons with six points after 10 minutes of play.
The Dragons extended their lead to 11 in the second quarter after outscoring Delaware 14-12. Both teams made five shots, including a shot from long range. McCormack led the Dragons with four points. Six of the seven Dragons who played scored points in the second frame.
Delaware trimmed the lead in the third quarter after scoring 16 points and holding Drexel to 10. The Blue Hens shot 5-for-11 and 3-for-4 from long range. Tara Cousins led UD with six points. The home team shot 4-for-15. Baker led Drexel with four points. After three quarters, Drexel led 48-43.
In the fourth frame, Delaware pulled to as close as one point from the Dragons on a Chloe Wilson jumper with 8:17 left in the quarter. However, that is as close as Delaware would get to the lead as Drexel scored 16 points and held Delaware to just 11 points. O'Neill and McCormack helped the cause by sinking back-to-back three-pointers to widen the gap.
