Drexel Defeats NJIT, 75-43

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel Dragons defeated the NJIT Highlanders Tuesday night, 75-43, at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. Shane Blakeney and Kevon Vanderhorst each scored 13 points in the win.
BY THE NUMBERS
Blakeney went six for eight from the free throw line and pulled down a season high nine rebounds. The junior also led the Dragons with 29 minutes.
Vanderhorst tied his season high in points and stole the ball twice. His dunk with 3:26 in the first half put Drexel up by 12.
Eli Beard went three for six from the field and three for four from beyond the arc. Defensively Beard had two rebounds and a steal. Josh Reed continued his strong start to the season with nine points and six rebounds in 22 minutes. The sophomore also had two steals and six rebounds. Reed finished the game with a team high +30 on the night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The game started slow for both teams, with Drexel and NJIT combining for nine points in the first five minutes before a layup by Garfield Turner at 14:05 started a 15-1 run. The Dragons held onto the ball, only turning the ball over four times in the first half while forcing six from NJIT. Defensively, Drexel was able to hold NJIT to 23% shooting in the first frame. Drexel outrebounded NJIT 26-19 in the first half and outscored NJIT in the paint 14-8.
The Dragons held the Highlanders to eight made shots in the entire second half, six from the field and two from three. Shane Blakeney went five for six in the second half from the free throw line and two for four from the field. Horace Simmons gave the Dragons seven points off the bench including a three point shot that put Drexel up by 22 with 12:45 to play. In the second half, Drexel shot 54% from the field and 40% from three, scoring 17 points off 10 turnovers and making the most of their opportunities with nine second chance points.
