Early Scoring Propels Women's Basketball Past American, 55-48

PHILADELPHIA – A career-high from Molly Rullo helped the Drexel women's basketball team defeat the American Eagles, 55-48 on Wednesday night inside the Daskalakis Athletic Center.
BY THE NUMBERS
Prior to the game, Drexel Athletics celebrated Amaris Baker for scoring her 1000th career point against Marist and Janet E. and Barry C. Burkholder Family Women's Basketball Head Coach Amy Mallon for her 100th career victory against Pitt earlier this season.
Baker paced the Dragons with 20 points across 38 minutes. The graduate student sunk all five of her free throw attempts.
Rullo added a career-high 11 points on 4-for-7 shooting. The freshman also posted a career-high in minutes played, seeing 31 minutes of action.
The Dragons held a 24-point lead at one point, but a 18-point second half allowed American to pull itself back into the game. The Dragon defense held the Eagles to just 15 points in the first half.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Drexel opened the game on a 7-2 run in the first five minutes of play. Out of the timeout Drexel scored four unanswered points to take a nine-point lead and force the Eagles to call their first timeout. The Dragons then extended their lead to 12 to close the quarter. Baker sunk her first three-pointer at the buzzer to put Drexel ahead, 18-6. The Drexel defense held American to 3-for-15 shooting in the first 10 minutes.
The Dragons outscored American, 19-9 in the second quarter to take a 22-point lead into the locker room for halftime. Rullo paced the Dragons with seven points on 3-for-4 shooting. Baker scored five point, converting on all three chances from the free throw line.
American worked its way back into the game, outscoring the home team, 17-8. The Eagles connected on three shots from long range. The Dragons entered the final frame ahead by 13, 45-32.
The Eagles opened the fourth frame on a 9-2 run to cut the Drexel lead to single digits with five minutes remaining. Over the next 4 minutes, American pulled within four points of the Dragons. With the Dragons on the offensive, Laine McGurk hit a turnaround jumper to give Drexel a six-point lead and launch a four-point run to extend its lead to eight. American hit a trey with 28 seconds remaining, but that was all the team could do, as Drexel sunk both free throws to end the game.
