McCormack Ties Career-High 23 Points; Dragons Defeat Campbell, 60-54

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Cara McCormack tied a career-high 23 points in Drexel's victory against the Campbell Camels on Friday night in Buies Creek, N.C. Entering Friday night, the Camels held a 10-0 home record. Drexel improves to 14-9 and 10-3 in the conference, while Campbell drops to 15-10 and 8-5 in the CAA.
BY THE NUMBERS
It was the second-straight 20-point game for McCormack. The graduate student finished the game, connecting on seven of her nine attempts and was successful on five of six tries from deep. McCormack also shot a perfect 4-for-4 from the charity stripe.
Deja Evans finished one rebound shy of her second double-double of the season. The sophomore scored 15 points on 7-for-12 shooting. It is the seventh time this season the sophomore has scored more than 10 points.
Amaris Baker capped Drexel's double-digit performers. The senior finished with 13 points on 5-for-13 shooting. Baker also found the bottom of the bucket on three tries from long range.
Chloe Hodges finished with a career-high 12 rebounds in the effort. The graduate student added seven points to her stat sheet as well.
Drexel held Campbell to just 33% from the field and only 19% from deep. The Camel's could not beat top the Drexel defense, who tallied five more boards than Campbell.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After giving up the first bucket of the game, launched a 12-point run, where the Dragons went 3-for-3 and held the Camels to 0-for-5 and a 3-minute scoring drought. Campbell called a timeout with 6:14 left. For the rest of the frame, scored 11 points to trim the deficit to nine. Drexel finished the quarter shooting 8-for-12, while holding the Camels to 5-for-15 from the floor. McCormack paced the Dragons with nine points on 3-for-3 shooting, all from deep. Drexel led Campbell, 21-13 after one.
Campbell opened the second quarter on a 6-2 run which brought the game to the media timeout. Despite the early Campbell lead, Drexel finished the quarter with nine points and held the Camels to 13. Drexel finished the quarter ahead, 30-26. Baker was responsible for seven of Drexel's nine points, shooting 3-for-4.
The Dragons opened the second half with a 6-2 run of their own, extending their lead to eight points. Campbell called its second timeout of the night to send the game into the floating media. The Dragons' run was then extended to 11-3, over the next four minutes, extending their lead to a game-high 16 points. Drexel ended the frame by outscoring Campbell, 19-11. McCormack finished the third quarter with eight points on another perfect frame, shooting 3-for-3 and 2-for-2 from deep. Drexel led Campbell ahead, 49-37.
Campbell outscored Drexel in the fourth and trimmed the deficit to six, but Drexel's offense was able to hold on to the lead, sinking 5-for-6 free throws in the final minute of the game. Drexel scored 11 points in the final frame.
UP NEXT
Drexel completes its road trip with a visit to Elon, N.C. to face the Phoenix on Sunday, February 23 at 1 p.m. The Dragons then return home on Friday Febraury 28 to play its final two home games. Drexel hosts Monmouth in the Friday matchup and then host Campbell on Sunday, March 2 for senior day.
