Balanced Offense Lifts Drexel Past Monmouth, 75-65

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Drexel women's basketball team extended its winning streak to five games after defeating the Monmouth Hawks on Friday night in the Daskalakis Athletic Center, 75-65. With the victory Drexel (16-9, 12-3 CAA) has clinched one of the top-four seeds in the 2025 CAA Tournament and will receive a double-bye. Also with the victory, Drexel has ensured that it will finish above .500 for the 11th straight season.
BY THE NUMBERS
Laine McGurk posted a season-high 14 points on Friday night, connecting on five shots, grabbing three assists and tallying three assists. The sophomore also added three assists to her stat sheet.
Chloe Hodges finished the game with 13 points and eight assists. It is the 10th double-digit performance for Hodges this season and it is the fourth straight game where Hodges corralled eight or more rebounds.
It is the first time since the 2019-20 season that five Dragons finished in double digits in one game. McGurk and Amaris Baker paced the Dragons with 14 points each, while Hodges, Cara McCormack and Deja Evans all chipped in 10 or more points. The last time the Dragons had five different Dragons with double digit point totals was on January 12, 2020 against Hofstra. Keishana Washington, Bailey Greenberg, Mariah Leonard, Kate Connolly and Hannah Nihill all scored more than 10 points in the effort.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Drexel opened the first frame with a 10-4 lead and held the Hawks to 1-for-7 from the field. The Dragons finished the quarter adding 14 points. While, Monmouth improved its shooting to 6-for-13, the Hawks' defense could not contain the quick-moving Drexel offense, that went 4-for-7 from behind the arc and cashed in on all four attempts from the charity stripe. Drexel ended the first, ahead 24-16.
Drexel held Monmouth to under 10 points in the second quarter. The Dragons shot just over 50 percent in the frame, finishing with a 8-for-15 mark. On defense, Drexel held Monmouth to just nine points on 3-for-11 shooting. McGurk paced the Dragons in scoring, tallying six points on 3-for-4 shooting. The sophomore also earned three assists.
Monmouth outscored the Dragons in the third frame, 16-13. Both teams made five field goals but it was a Monmouth trey that gave it an advantage. Amaris Baker paced the Dragons in the third quarter, scoring five points. Drexel ended the third quarter with a 12-point lead, 53-43.
Once again, Monmouth outscored Drexel in the fourth quarter but it was only by two points, as Drexel still managed to score 22 points in the frame. The Dragons shot 6-for-13 and connected on a pair of treys during the frame, while Monmouth went 6-for-15 and only 1-for-4 from deep. The Hawks were 11-for-13 from the free throw line. Drexel closed out the victory making all eight free throws.

Drexel returns to the DAC for one last time during the 2024-25 regular season on Sunday afternoon. The Dragons host the Campbell Camels on senior day at 2 p.m. The Dragons will celebrate the careers of McCormack, Hodges and Baker.
