
Drexel Falls Just Short to Towson in CAA Quarterfinals, 82-76

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Drexel rallied from a 15-point second half deficit but came up just short in an 82-76 loss in the CAA Semifinals to top-seeded Towson at CareFirst Arena. The Dragons trimmed the lead to one with less than two minutes left, but the Tigers drained a 3-pointer with 25 seconds to go to seal the win. Drexel had its season end with an 18-15 overall record.
The Dragons trailed by 12 with seven minutes to play, but started chipping away at the Tiger (22-10) lead. Drexel scored five straight points, three on a 3-pointer by Kobe MaGee then two more by Yame Butler after a steal, to cut it to 71-64. Towson got the lead back to eight, but back-to-back 3-pointers by MaGee and Shane Blakeney made it a 76-74 contest. The Tigers made one of two free throws and on the next possession Butler hit a short jumper to make it a one score game. Drexel made a few stops but couldn't come up with a rebound after Nendah Tarke missed the front end of a one-and-one. Towson had a new 20 second shot clock with 40 seconds left in the game. Dylan Williamson took possession, and milked the clock down. He then drained a long 3-pointer, with 25 seconds to go to make it a two-possession game at 80-76. MaGee and Butler each tried 3-pointers on the next possession, but they would not fall and Tyler Tejada made both free throws with two ticks left on the clock as the Tigers advanced to the CAA Semifinals where they will face Delaware.
Blakeney had the best offensive game of his career for the Dragons. He scored a career-high 24 points and was 9-for-11 from the floor. He also drained five of his six long-range attempts and kept the Dragons in the game. Butler, a senior, scored 14 points and handed out three assists. MaGee finished with 13 points, while Jason Drake added 12.
The Dragons shot the ball well all day and were 63 percent from the floor in the second half. They finished the game at 50 percent overall and from the 3-point stripe (11-for-22). Drexel committed just two second half turnovers and had eight in the game.
Williamson had a career-night for Towson. He scored a career-best 32 points and was 7-for-10 from behind the arc. Most of those seven came with a Drexel defender in his face. Williamson had 24 of his points in the final 20 minutes. Tejada, the CAA Player of the Year, had 21 points. Towson grabbed 17 rebounds on the offensive end that led to 16 points.
