NEWTOWN SQUARE, Pa. - Drexel graduate Drue Nicholas won the 125th BMW Philadelphia Amateur at Aronimink Golf Club on Friday afternoon. Nicholas defeated Patrick Istzwan, 5&4, to earn the win and a berth in the upcoming U.S. Amateur, which will be played in August at the famed Olympic Club in San Francisco. Nicholas qualified in stroke play on Monday to get in the round of 16. He proceeded to defeat four opponents in stroke play to set up Monday's final match, which consisted of 36 holes. Nicholas became just the 25th person to win both the Philadelphia Amateur and the Patterson Cup.
Nicholas had a big week with not only winning the Philadelphia Amateur, but graduating from Drexel. He was a four-time All-CAA selection and was the low scorer on this year's team that tied for the CAA Championship before falling in a playoff. It was the best finish of any Drexel golf team in school history.
