Drexel Defeats William & Mary, 64-58

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel men's basketball team wrapped up its three-game homestand with a strong, 64-58 win over the William & Mary Tribe. Kevon Vanderhorst and Shane Blakeney each had 13 points.
BY THE NUMBERS
Vanderhorst shot 50% from the field, sharing the ball with two assists, pulled in a rebound and stole the ball once.
Blakeney grabbed six rebounds, five assists and a block to seal the win.
Victor Panov dominated the boards, rebounding the ball ten times, including six on defense.
The Dragons outrebounded the Tribe, 37-28 and shut down William & Mary's offense, holding them to 36.7% shooting.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The game was initially a back-and-forth game. Blakeney, Dillon Tingler and Josh Reed put the Dragons up six early before William & Mary responded. The Tribe took a 17-16 lead with 8:32 in the first before Eli Beard responded with a three to put Drexel back in front. The game remained tight, with the Tribe tying the score at 21 each at 7:06. A Vanderhorst jump shot started a 14-3 run for the Dragons, capped off by back-to-back Tingler layups.
Drexel led 37-28 at the half. The Dragons shot 58.3% from the field in the first half while holding the Tribe to 40%. Drexel also out-rebounded William & Mary 18-12 and had more assists, leading 11-6.
The second half started slowly for both teams, with the first basket coming nearly five minutes in. William & Mary started the half strong, with a 11-5 run cutting the lead to four with 13:40 remaining. A 6-0 run from Drexel extended the lead to 11 with 11:27 left. The Tribe went on a 6-0 run before points from Vanderhorst, Blakeney and Garfield Turner made it 53-47 with 5:10 to go.
William & Mary cut the lead to one with 1:22 left before a three from Victor Panov, and a dunk from Vanderhorst gave Drexel a six-point lead with 31 seconds left.
The Tribe attempted to come back, but a block by Blakeney and free throws from Reed sealed the win for Drexel.
