Blakeney and Beard Lead the Way as Drexel Beats Monmouth, 73-51

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The Drexel men's basketball team started its two-game road trip with a 73-51 win over the Monmouth Hawks on Thursday. Shane Blakeney led the team with 18 points.
BY THE NUMBERS
Blakeney shot 6-10 on the night, including 5-6 from three. He also pulled in seven rebounds along with two assists and two steals.
Eli Beard scored 15, shooting 5-8 from three. He also stole the ball twice.
Victor Panov scored nine with five rebounds, four assists, a steal and a block.
The Dragons shot 48.1% and outrebounded the Hawks 35-34.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dragons jumped out to a 9-4 lead early with Beard, Panov and Kevon Vanderhorst all contributing. A Blakeney three-pointer put Drexel up 12-7 with 14:34 remaining. A 6-0 Monmouth run put the Hawks up 15-14 before Beard put the Dragons back in front with a three-pointer at 10:33. The game remained close until 7:40, when back-to-back threes from Blakeney and Beard started a 19-0 Drexel run to end the first half. Drexel shot 61.9% from the field in the first half, including 61.5% from three.
The second half began with a 10-2 Drexel run, capped off by a Vanderhorst layup with 14:43 remaining. The Hawks responded with an 11-7 run before free throws from Garfield Turner with 8:04 to go. A three from Beard and a layup from Dillon Tingler put the Dragons up 62-34 with 6:34 left. Monmouth responded with a 14-6 run, but a three from Max Davis and a dunk by Josh Reed put the game out of reach, with Drexel winning 73-51.
Drexel's defense held Monmouth to 37% in the half and 32.1% on the night. This was the third straight game that the Dragons have held an opponent to a season low. On offense, the Dragons shot a season high 55.6% from three.
