Dragons Drop Close Game to Towson, 59-58

TOWSON, Md. – The Drexel men's basketball team dropped a close, 59-58 road game to the Towson Tigers on Monday afternoon. Shane Blakeney led the team with 16 points.
BY THE NUMBERS
Blakeney shot 64% on the afternoon while pulling in three rebounds, handing out two assists and stealing the ball.
Kevon Vanderhorst scored 11 points to go with four rebounds, two steals and two assists.
Victor Panov had 10 points on 57% shooting along with three rebounds, a block and a steal.
Defensively, the Dragons held the Tigers to 33% shooting and outblocked them 4-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The game started off close with Blakeney, Panov and Garfield Turner all scoring early. Turner's layup made it an 8-8 game with 13:48 to go in the first. A Josh Reed layup at 12:15 started a 19-2 run for the Dragons. During the run, Reed and Dillon Tingler scored off of opponent turnovers and Blakeney and Panov both made threes. A 4-0 Tiger run cut the lead to 12 with 2:57 remaining before a Blakeney layup off of a turnover made the score 32-18 with 1:58 left. The Dragons led 32-20 at halftime. Drexel held Towson to 18.5% shooting in the first half and forced seven turnovers.
Towson started the second half with a 9-5 run before a jumpshot from Kevon Vanderhorst extended the lead back up to 10 with 15:50 remaining. An 11-3 Tiger run made it a 44-40 Drexel lead with 10:42 left. A Ralph Akuta layup with 9:57 remaining gave Drexel a six-point lead. Drexel went on a 6-2 run, capped off by a layup from Panov at 5:29, to extend the lead to eight. A Towson turnover led to a Kevon Vanderhorst layup at 3:43, making it a 56-48 game. The Tigers ended the game on an 11-2 run, taking the lead with 0:08 remaining on a pair of free throws. Drexel finished the game shooting 52% and outscoring Towson in the paint 38-26.
