Drexel Downed by Stony Brook in Close Conference Matchup, 57-53

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Drexel women's basketball team was defeated by the Stony Brook Seawolves, 57-53, on Friday night on Long Island, N.Y.
BY THE NUMBERS
Deja Evans turned in her highest scoring performance of the season with 20 points after shooting 9-for-16 and grabbing a team-high eight rebounds.
Laine McGurk finished with 13 points on 4-for-11 shooting. The junior also made two treys.
Amaris Baker was the third Dragon in double digits, scoring 10 points.
The game featured seven occurrences where the game was tied, eight lead changes and the largest lead for either team was seven.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Drexel took a 11-7 lead into the first media timeout of the game. After scoring in the first its first seven points at the start of the quarter, Drexel shut Stony Brook out for over five minutes. The Seawolves took the lead with just under two minutes left in the quarter. The Dragons could not score in the final 3:37 of the quarter and finished down one, 12-11. Evans finished the quarter with a team-high four points.
The Seawolves extended their lead to five in the second quarter. Drexel opened the second frame with a 6-3 run to take a two-point lead, which they would hold until the 1:33 mark, when Stony Brook launched into a seven-point run to end the half. Evans pushed her point total to double digits after scoring seven points in the frame. Stony Brook led at the half, 29-24.
Drexel outscored the Seawolves, 12-7 in the first five minutes of play in the third frame to tie the game to 36 with 4:28 left to play. Stony Brook scored seven points in the final 4:32 of the frame and held Drexel to just four to take a three-point lead into the final quarter.
The Dragons managed to pull within three points of the Seawolves in the fourth quarter and had a chance to tie the game. With 4.4 seconds remaining in the quarter, Drexel inbounded the ball to McGurk and the junior drew a foul behind the three-point line. McGurk missed the first shot, made the second and purposely missed the third shot in hopes of an offensive rebound. Stony Brook grabbed the board and called a timeout with 3.3 seconds remaining and ahead by two, 55-53. Stony Brook made its two free throws to finish the game ahead, 57-53.
