Dragons Battle to 68-59 Victory Over Elon

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel women's basketball team outlasted the Elon Phoenix, 68-59 on Friday evening at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. The Dragons improve to 15-8 overall and 8-4 in CAA play.
BY THE NUMBERS
Amaris Baker finished with 27 points on 9-for-16 shooting and grabbed five rebounds. It is the 14th time this season that the graduate student has scored north of 20 points, and it is the 29th time of her career that she crossed that threshold.
Deja Evans scored 14 points on 5-for-8 shooting. The junior scored a perfect 4-for-4 from the charity stripe and grabbed seven rebounds in the effort.
Elon only held the lead for 39 seconds before Drexel surged ahead to hold the lead for 38:53. The Dragons' largest lead was 19 points at the end of the third quarter.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Drexel opened the game by outscoring Elon, 15-8 in the first frame. The Dragons shot 5-for-eight and connected on all four treys. The Dragons held the Phoenix to just 4-for-15 from the field. Baker went 2-for-4 and sunk two treys in the first 10 minutes of play.
The Dragons took a 16-14 edge in the second quarter after shooting 7-for-10. Deja Evans led Drexel with eight points and grabbed three rebounds as well. Drexel ended the quarter, shooting 5-for-6 to bring the 31-22 lead into the locker room for halftime.
Drexel opened the third frame on a 10-6 run in the first 3:30 of the quarter, leading to Elon's first called timeout. Returning from the timeout, Drexel extended its lead, scoring another 10 points and only conceding six points at the media timeout with 1:36 remaining in the third. The Dragons finished the quarter with an eight-point edge to take a 17-point lead into the final 10 minutes of play.
Elon opened the fourth quarter on a 14-4 run in six minutes of play, cutting the Drexel lead to single digits. Drexel limited the damage by putting together a 7-4 run up to a minute left. Drexel extended the lead back to double digits with a pair of free throws by Julia Garcia Roig.

Drexel has its final bye of the regular season on Sunday and will return to action on Friday, February 20 against the Hampton Pirates. Action from Hampton, Va. is set for 7 p.m. on FloCollege. The team will then travel to Williamsburg, Va. to take on the William & Mary Tribe at 1 p.m. on Sunday, February 22.
