Dragons Drop Close Game to Stony Brook, 72-69

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Drexel men's basketball team dropped a close, back-and-forth road game to the Stony Brook Seawolves, 72-69, on Monday. Shane Blakeney led the team with 19 points. The International Brotherhood of Electrical Worker's Local 98 is once again the presenting sponsor of Drexel Men's Basketball.
BY THE NUMBERS
Blakeney finished the night with four rebounds, four assists and a steal.
Kevon Vanderhorst had 14 points on 6/9 shooting to go with two steals and two assists.
Victor Panov had nine points, rebounded the ball seven times, blocked a shot and stole the ball once.
The Dragons outrebounded the Seawolves 41-29.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dragons scored first off a Vanderhorst three at 18:19. Back-to-back baskets gave Stony Brook the lead before a three from Panov with 16:27 remaining in the half started a 17-6 Drexel run.
A 6-0 Seawolf run made it a 20-16 game with 9:32 to go, but baskets by Blakeney and Josh Reed put the Dragons ahead by 11 with 8:21 left. A 15-2 Stony Brook run helped them retake the lead with just over two minutes in the half before an Eli Beard three-pointer put Drexel back in front by one with 1:45 remaining. Two quick baskets from the Seawolves made it a 36-32 game with 30 seconds left. The half ended on a Panov three-pointer to bring Drexel within one going into the second frame.
Stony Brook started the second half with a 9-2 run before a Blakeney layup started an 8-0 run for the Dragons, capped off by a Vanderhorst layup to tie the game at 45 with 14:24 to play. The two teams traded baskets, with neither able to pull ahead.
A Blakeney jump shot started a 9-4 run, which gave Drexel a four-point lead with 4:18 remaining. Back-to-back Seawolf baskets put Stony Brook back in front, but Vanderhorst responded with back-to-back baskets of his own to make it 67-63 with 2:33 left. The game ended on a 9-2 Seawolf run, with a final score of 72-69.
Drexel's bench outscored Stony Brook 16-10 on the night.
