Drexel Falls in Double-Overtime Thriller Against Monmouth, 62-60

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel women's basketball team was defeated by the Monmouth Hawks in a double-overtime battle on Sunday afternoon inside the Daskalakis Athletic Center, 62-60. The Dragons fell to 14-8 overall and a 7-4 conference record, while Monmouth improved to 15-7 and 8-3 in CAA play.
BY THE NUMBERS
Amaris Baker scored 22 points and connected with the bottom of the basket three times from deep.
Laine McGurk finished the game with 25 points and also grabbed six rebounds and one assist. McGurk scored nine point in overtime and hit a buzzer beater in regulation to push the game into the first overtime.
It was the first time that Drexel women's basketball has played a two-overtime game since the team faced William & Mary on January 30, 2022 and defeated the Tribe.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dragons began with a low-scoring first quarter, in favor of Drexel, 12-7. Baker connected on a pair of treys to help give Drexel the 5-point lead. The Dragons held the Hawk defense to 3-for-12 in the first quarter.
Drexel and Monmouth each chipped in 12 points in the second quarter to keep a five-point Drexel lead. Baker added another six points. Drexel led at the half, 24-19.
The third quarter was all Monmouth. The Hawks outscored the Dragons 15-6 in the first eight minutes of the quarter and forced Drexel to call its first timeout of the game. The quarter ended with shutting the Dragons out and outscoring the home team, 17-6 in the quarter. The game entered the final quarter with Monmouth ahead, 36-30.
Drexel outscored Monmouth, 16-10 in the fourth quarter and with the clock expiring, with Drexel down three, Julia Garcia Roig took a trey to tie the ball, a Grace O'Neill rebound gave Drexel another shot, which McGurk banked in a shot and sent the game into overtime.
In Drexel's first overtime period of the season, both teams scored 10 points and forced a second overtime period. McGurk and Baker totaled nine of Drexel's points. McGurk finished with five, while Baker scored four.
In the second overtime period, Monmouth outscored Drexel 6-4 to take the game, 62-60.

Drexel returns to the Daskalakis Athletic Center on Friday, February 13 to face the Elon Phoenix at 6 p.m. That weekend will serve as the team's final bye of the regular season, as it will be given February 15 off. Action on Friday against the Phoenix can be seen on FloCollege.
