Michael Westerfer was promoted to assistant athletics director for sports medicine in August of 2012. He originally came to the department as the head athletic trainer in September of 2004. Westerfer is responsible for overseeing Drexel’s Sports Medicine staff and for the daily injury prevention and treatment of the University’s student-athletes. He is also an adjunct faculty member in the Goodwin College.
Before arriving at Drexel, Westerfer was the assistant athletic trainer at Temple University. He coordinated all phases of health care for five athletic teams and worked with the head athletic trainer in covering football. In addition, he was the supervisor of two of Temple’s athletic training rooms. Westerfer was also an adjunct faculty member in the department of kinesiology, where he taught classes and worked with the undergraduate athletic training program.
Westerfer previously worked at The George Washington University for four seasons. He also worked at Valley Hospital Sports Institute as a staff athletic trainer and as the head athletic trainer at Don Bosco Prep in Ramsey, N.J.
A 1991 graduate of Temple University with a degree in physical education, Westerfer received a master’s degree in exercise science from the University of Massachusetts in 1994. While at UMass, Westerfer served as a graduate assistant trainer. He is a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association and is a Pennsylvania Athletic Training Licensure.
Westerfer is a native of Philadelphia and graduated from Central High School. He and his wife, Jackie, reside in Lafayette Hill, Pa. They have three children, Erinn, Logan and Brett.
