Denise Ferrero is in her eighth season in 2017-18 after joining the Drexel Crew staff in the fall of 2010. She is the assistant women’s varsity coach and works administratively for both the men’s and women’s teams.
Ferrero has helped the Dragons’ women reach consistent success at the Dad Vail Regatta, winning five straight overall titles from 2013-2017 as well as the women’s points title in 2017 for the first time in school history. After Drexel’s varsity eight matched its best Dad Vail performance in program history with a silver medal in 2016, the Dragons took a leap forward, winning the boat’s first-ever gold medal in 2017. The second varsity eight also came away with the gold in 2017, giving the boat a medal in five of the last six years. In 2015, the women’s varsity eight won the bronze medal, and in 2014, the women’s varsity eight and second varsity eight each won silver medals, which were crucial to helping the team win the overall title. Drexel’s freshmen eight and second varsity eight earned the first gold medals at Dad Vail for the women’s program in 2012, with the second varsity repeating in 2013.
She has helped to grow the Drexel-hosted Kerr Cup Regatta over the past several years, all while helping the women win the Lela H. Kerr Cup six of the last eight seasons. Ferrero has also helped them to victory at the Kelly Cup in each of the last six years. The Dragons have had success at the George Washington Invitational and the Knecht Cup under Ferrero’s watch as well.
At the CAA Championships, Ferrero assisted the women’s varsity eight and the second varsity eight each to three straight silver medals. In 2015, 2016 and 2017, the Dragons finished second at CAAs for the best finishes in program history. In the fall seasons with Ferrero, Drexel won the Head of the Schuylkill in each of her five first seasons, including the women’s title in 2011 and 2013.
Ferrero came to Drexel after spending two seasons with the Mountain Hawks at her alma mater, Lehigh University. At Lehigh, Ferrero worked with the varsity women’s rowing team along with coaching the varsity four and second varsity eight. Prior to Lehigh, Ferrero spent a season at Rutgers University developing a team of three freshmen eights.
Ferrero graduated from Lehigh University in May of 2007 with a degree in psychology. As an athlete, Ferrero was a captain of her collegiate team. She also spent two summers rowing for a pre-elite racing team in Philadelphia, Vesper Boat Club, competing at U.S. Nationals and Canadian Henley Regatta. Ferrero is an avid runner, who currently trains and competes in marathons and triathlons. She completed her first Ironman competition in August 2014.
She lives in Philadelphia with her husband Kevin and their son Elroy.
