Bill Herrion’s tenure as head coach of Drexel men’s basketball represents the most successful sustained period in program history. Serving as the Dragons’ head coach from 1991–99, Herrion guided Drexel to unprecedented heights, building a nationally respected program defined by consistency, competitiveness, and championship success.
Under Herrion’s leadership, Drexel earned four postseason berths, including three of the five NCAA Tournament appearances in school history. From 1994–96, the Dragons captured three straight conference championships and advanced to the NCAA Tournament in each season, highlighted by the program’s lone NCAA Tournament victory—an upset of fifth-seeded Memphis in 1996.
Herrion compiled a remarkable 167–71 record in eight seasons, good for a .702 winning percentage—the highest of any head coach in program history. His teams advanced to the conference championship game seven times in eight years, won three conference tournament titles, and claimed four regular-season championships. Drexel also recorded 20 or more wins in six seasons during his tenure.
A four-time North Atlantic/America East Conference Coach of the Year, Herrion’s 1995–96 squad set the school record with 27 victories and was later honored with the prestigious John Wanamaker Award by the Philadelphia Sports Congress. That historic team was inducted into the Drexel Athletics Hall of Fame in 2011.
