Dominick Mejia's (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern) driving lay-up gave Drexel a 52-49 lead with 1:53 left. The Dragons' defense held the Knights scoreless the rest of the way. Chaz Crawford (Philadelphia, Pa./Hargrave Military) came up with a big offensive board with 33 seconds left, which set up Sanchez's free throws.
Drexel held a slim four point lead at intermission, 29-25. The Dragons defense held the Knights to just six field goals in the first half. FDU stayed in the game by making all 11 of its free throws in the first half. The Dragons had chances to pull away, but they committed 10 first-half turnovers and made just 4-for-9 from the line.
Frank Elegar (Bronx, N.Y./St. Raymond's) and Mejia each had 10 points for Drexel. Elegar, who was limited to just 17 minutes due to foul trouble, and Sanchez each grabbed seven rebounds.
Drexel outrebounded FDU, 41-34, and forced the Knights into 19 turnovers. FDU was only 2-for-13 from behind the arc and finished the game shooting just 32 percent.
The Dragons return home to face Ball State in a non-conference game on Tuesday. It is the return game from last year's ESPN Bracket Buster series and will be the final game before the holiday break.
