Carter hit a pair of free throws to give UNCW the lead for good at 58-56. Drexel had its chances in the extra frame, but made just three of its eight free throw attempts. The Seahawks were 2-for-4 from the floor and made eight free throws to ice the win.
Drexel trailed 47-39 with just over eight minutes to play but went on a 9-0 run to take the lead. Kenell Sanchez (Camden, N.J./Bishop Eustace) nailed a three-pointer to make it 48-47 in favor of the Dragons with just under two minutes left. Drexel held the Seahawks off the board for a stretch of 6:23, but that ended when John Goldsberry knocked down a pair of free throws at the 1:36 mark. There were six lead changes in the final two minutes. The Dragons forced the extra session when Frank Elegar (Bronx, N.Y./St. Raymond's) scored on a short jumper with 11 seconds remaining. After a UNCW miss, Drexel got possession with one second left. Bashir Mason (Jersey City, N.J./St. Benedict's) heaved a desperation three-pointer from past half court that bounced off the front of the rim.
Elegar led Drexel with 15 points and four blocked shots. Dominick Mejia (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern) added 14, while Sanchez had all 13 of his points in the second half.
Vladimir Kuljanin led a balanced scoring attack for the Seahawks with 14 points. He finished 7-for-8 from the floor. Goldsberry added 13, while Carter finished with 12 points.
Drexel will play at Northeastern on Saturday before returning home to Philadelphia to begin a three-game homestand at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. UNCW will play at Hofstra on Saturday.
