Philadelphia, Pa. - Narissa Suber hit a long jumper to trim what had been a 14-point Old Dominion lead to four with 1:37 in the game. But the Lady Monarchs (6-7, 4-0 CAA) came up with two key defensive stops in the final minute and a half to hold on for a 63-53 win over Drexel (6-8, 1-4 CAA).
Candice Williams scored a season-best 10 points, six of which came on the first three field goals of the second half to key a Drexel run. But the Dragons struggled to find scoring outside of Williams, Suber and Catherine Scanlon who combined for 43 of the team's 53 points. Scanlon led the Dragons with 19 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Suber put in 14 points and found her touch from three-point land again, making two of her five attempts from deep.
T.J. Jordan, the CAA's leading three-point threat, opened the contest by hitting four three-pointers on her first four shots of the game to give Old Dominion a 19-5 lead at the 14:39 mark. Senior guard Jackie Falson checked into the game and helped to shut down Jordan for the duration of the first half. The Dragons went on a 17-6 run to close the gap to three points at 25-21 with 2:39 remaining in the period. Old Dominion's Lawona Davis hit three buckets in the final minutes and the Lady Monarchs capitalized on a late offensive rebound and put-back to take a 34-25 lead at the half.
Drexel would rally twice in the second half. The first one, a 7-2 run capped by a jump shot from Delise Johnson in the corner, cut Old Dominion's lead to six points. Davis again steadied her team to push the Lady Monarchs' advantage back to 11 points at 51-40 with 8:04 in the game.
In their second rally of the half, the Dragons took advantage of an Old Dominion post that has been depleted by injuries this season. Johnson scored five of her eight points in the 13-6 run that was capped by a Scanlon reverse layup to make it a four-point game, 57-53, with 1:37 to play. Drexel continued to attack the basket but was twice turned away by Lady Monarchs' blocks.
The loss is Drexel's third straight conference defeat, dropping the team to 1-4 in the CAA. The Dragons travel to play regional rival Delaware next Friday, Jan. 20 at 7:00 p.m.
