Seven Dragons Advance on Day Two

College Park, Md. – The Drexel swimming and diving team completed the second day of competition at the Maryland Terrapin Cup Invitational with six swimmers and one diver advancing to finals.
Freshman Mert Karsiyakalilar qualified for finals after finishing eighth out of 69 swimmers in the preliminary heat of the 100 butterfly. His preliminary time of 50.40 ranked him fourth on Drexel's all-time list in the 100 butterfly, until he posted a 50.16 in the finals, good enough for seventh place and second-fastest in Drexel history. In the 100 backstroke, senior Ian MacKinnon remained consistent earning a 13th-place finish in the prelims (52.98) and the finals (52.68).
Senior Barbaros Cem Pasaoglu placed seventh in the 200 freestyle to earn a spot in the final. Pasaoglu touched the wall in 1:41.75 in preliminaries and came back to finish sixth in 1:41.77 in the finals. Junior Gohkan Hulagu also swam well in the 200 freestyle, qualifying for the bonus final after finishing 24th in 1:44.42. Hulagu improved his place by one position, finishing 23rd overall in 1:44.56.
The Dragon women got top performances from junior Katie McCann and sophomores Kate Hynes and Sarah Keeley. McCann placed 20th in the 200 freestyle in 1:53.55, improving her second-fastest time in school history from 1:54.01. McCann's 20th-place finish in a field of 98 swimmers qualified her for the bonus final. McCann finished third in her heat and improved her time, finishing in 1:52.88, to break Drexel's school record in that event.
In the diving competition, Hynes finished fifth overall in the 1-meter event with a score of 243.00 after placing second in the prelims and winning the 3-meter event on day one. Keeley touched the wall in 1:06.62 in the 100 breaststroke, good enough for 13th place and to qualify for finals. Keeley returned for a 16th-place finish with a time of 1:07.23 in the finals.
Competition concludes at the Maryland Terrapin Cup Invitational Saturday, Nov. 18. The Dragons begin preliminary competition at 10:00 a.m. and finals start at 6:00 p.m.
