Philadelphia, Pa. – Frank Elegar (Bronx, N.Y./St. Raymond's) scored a career-high 23 points and grabbed 13 rebounds and Chaz Crawford (Philadelphia, Pa./Hargrave Military Academy) blocked seven shots as Drexel defeated Saint Joseph's in the Palestra, 72-56. The Dragons (4-2) shot a season-high 57.8 percent from the floor.
The Dragons went on a 14-0 run midway through the first half to take the lead and never trailed again in the contest. During the run, the Dragons held the Hawks scoreless for a 6:35 stretch. The first-half lead swelled to 16 points before the Hawks started chipping away and cut the lead to 32-23 at intermission. Saint Joseph's managed just nine field goals in the first half.
The Hawks scored the first bucket of the second half to make it a seven-point game, but that was as close as they would come the rest of the way. The Dragons were on fire from the floor in the second half, making 14 of their 22 attempts (.636) in the final 20 minutes.
Elegar scored 15 of his 23 points in the second half and finished 10-for-14 from the floor. Dominick Mejia (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern) added 19 points, including four three-pointers, for the Dragons. Tramayne Hawthorne (Steelton, Pa./Steelton-Highspire) added 10 points off the bench.
Ahmad Nivins, the Hawks leading scorer and rebounder, was held to just one point and two rebounds. Pat Calathes scored 19 points for the Hawks and had a team-high nine rebounds. He was the only Saint Joseph's player in double figures in scoring.
The victory was Drexel's second in their last three games against their city rivals. Saint Joseph's entered the game leading the all-time series, 42-6.
Drexel returns to the Daskalakis Athletic Center to face Fairleigh Dickinson on Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. The game can be heard on WNTP 990 AM and on the web at drexeldragons.com.
