Drexel's Record-Breaking Night Is Too Much For Huskies

Philadelphia, Pa. - Carly Golden's half-court heave that banked in as time expired in the first half proved to be a harbinger for the Dragons hot shooting from deep. Drexel (11-12, 6-8 CAA) set a single-game school record with 18 three-pointers and routed Northeastern (7-16, 3-11 CAA), 81-51.
Drexel's 30-point win was its third-largest margin of victory in a CAA contest and its first 30-point victory since Dec. 22, 2005, a 78-44 win over Penn. All but three Dragons who saw time in the contest drained three-pointers in a record-setting night for Drexel.
Narissa Suber led all scorers for Drexel, scoring all 14 of her points in the first half. She is now five treys away from Drexel's all-time record. Catherine Scanlon and Nicole Hester had 13 points apiece. Scanlon's three-pointer one and a half minutes into the game made her just the fourth player in school history to make 100 threes. Erica Sheppard led the Huskies with 13 points. Freshman Elizabeth Tuzzolo scored her first collegiate points in the contest and finished with seven. Fellow frosh Kelly Golden also set her career-high with seven points.
The team jumped out to a quick 20-10 lead in the opening minutes, making its first six three-point attempts. When Golden's shot fell out of the rafters and banked in, it gave Drexel a 46-28 lead going into the locker room. The 46 points was Drexel's largest total for one half of basketball. Eleven of Drexel's 15 first-half field goals came from behind the three-point arc. The Dragons shot 11-for-19 from distance and 62.5 percent from the floor overall, while outworking the Huskies on the boards 19-7.
After badly missing its first three three-point attempts of the second period, Drexel settled down to can 7-of-16 in the period. Hester's three with 10:02 on the clock tied the program's all-time record of 13 triples set against William & Mary on Jan. 23, 2004. Minutes later senior Jackie Falson drained on from the top of the arc to break the record.
From that point Drexel went on a 12-6 run, bolstered by treys courtesy of Tuzzolo, Kelly Golden and Candice Williams. Tuzzolo and Golden's triples were the first of their respective careers and Williams' was just the third in her four-year tenure at Drexel.
Tuzzolo fittingly closed out the game with her second delivery from deep, providing the final margin with 38 seconds to play. The Dragons shot 54.9 percent in the contest, its best field-goal percentage of the season. Drexel also outrebounded Northeastern decisively, 43-24. The Huskies edged the Dragons 32-18 in the paint and scored 18 points off Drexel's 19 turnovers. But in the end the CAA newcomers succumbed to the Dragons' three-point barrage.
The win secures the Dragons seventh-place spot in the conference, one game behind UNC Wilmington. Drexel will strive to continue its hot shooting at Towson on Sunday, Feb. 19. Tip is set for 2:00 p.m. at the Towson Center.
