The sophomore has five goals in the Dragons' first two games
Philadelphia – Drexel field hockey won its second straight game with a 3-2 topping of
La Salle at Buckley Field. Catherine Chiara (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) scored two goals as Drexel upped its record to 2-0 while the Explorers fell to 1-1. Chiara now has five goals including both game winners for the Dragons.
La Salle opened the scoring early with a goal less than three minutes into the game on a deflection from Amy Comstock. Allison Geiger was credited with the assist. Eight minutes later Sarah Gostomski (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) scored the equalizer on a pass from Cassie Prentiss (Nanticoke, Pa./Nanticoke). Chiara then struck with her fourth goal of the season when Emily Horvat (Allentown, Pa./William Allen) found Chiara's stick in front of the cage. Chiara promptly delivered the ball past La Salle goalie Ellen Axelsen to give Drexel a lead it would not relinquish.
The teams each scored once in the second half as Chiara got her second goal of the game less than three minutes into the half while the Explorers' goal came with just 46 seconds left in the game. Drexel held on to win its second one-goal game of the season, 3-2.
Colleen McAndrew (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) made five saves to earn the victory. Axelsen made seven stops, including a save on a penalty stroke, in the cage for La Salle.
Drexel will conclude its three-game homestand on Sunday, Sept. 3 as the Dragons will take on St. Francis (Pa.) at 1:00 p.m.
