Philadelphia, Pa. - Old Dominion (10-7, 6-0 CAA) opened the game with an 11-0 run and did not look back in its seventh straight victory, 83-51, over Drexel (5-13, 0-7 CAA). Gabriela Marginean led the Dragons with 15 points and seven rebounds and Narissa Suber chipped in 14 points in the loss. T.J. Jordan shot Old Dominion to their sixth consecutive conference victory with 18 points.
Turnovers proved to be Drexel's undoing in the contest as the Dragons matched their season high of 30 give-aways, which last happened with they play the Lady Monarchs in Norfolk, Va. Old Dominion capitalized for 46 points off the Drexel miscues.
After making just six field goals in the first half and falling behind 37-18 at the break, Drexel showed some life in the second period, cranking out a 9-0 run that cut the lead to 16 points midway through the second half. Narissa Suber knocked down a quick three-pointer off a screen and Nicole McCombs powered her way to a layup and foul for a three-point play. Gabriela Marginean got herself to the line after Kelly Golden pulled down a rebound and winged the outlet pass the length of the court to the wide open forward. She knocked down one of two free-throws to make it a 51-35 game with 12:11 to play.
Drexel's mini run ignited the Lady Monarchs, who reeled off 16 points before Drexel would score again to close out the game. The Dragons stepped up their shooting in the second half, making 44 percent of their shots from the field. But the Dragons could not take full advantage of their solid second-half shooting due to the turnovers.
Shantel Wilson chipped in 13 points for the Lady Monarchs off the bench and Tamara Ransburg added 12 points to give Old Dominion three players in double figures. Sherida Triggs led the Lady Monarchs with seven rebounds.
Sophomore Carly Golden saw her first minutes of the season in the contest and knocked down a three-pointer to go with a rebound and an assist. Ransburg, Jazzmin Walters and Tish Lyons each grabbed four rebounds for Old Dominion.
The Dragons will try to bounce back against the Towson Tigers at the DAC on Thursday, Jan. 25 at 7:00 p.m.
