Philadelphia, Pa. – Carly Snyder (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) distributed assists to Jaclyn Barrett (Philadelphia, Pa./Central) and Caley Burke (Springfield, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) as the Dragons scored two second-half goals en route to their first conference win of the season, 2-0 over UNC Wilmington (8-6-1, 4-4 CAA). Drexel improved to 5-7-3 overall and 1-5-2 in CAA play. Kaitlin Bond (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) made six saves in goal for her fifth shutout of the season.
Snyder and the Dragons made good on their fourth corner kick of the match after earning it two minutes into the second half. Snyder teed up the free kick and served a high, arcing ball into the middle of the goal box. Barrett met the service with a header to the left side that deflected off a defender on its way into the net, giving Drexel a 1-0 lead.
In the 61st minute the Dragons nearly got an insurance goal off another set piece. Burke served up a free kick from 30 yards out near the center of the field. The ball bounced into the goal box where Michelle McKinley (Seaville, N.J./Ocean City) jockied for position and timed her jump for a header. But keeper Emily Pratt launched herself into McKinley to grab the ball, leveling the defender to save a certain goal.
Bond's biggest test in the match came in the 68th minute when a corner kick by UNC Wilmington resulted in two headers inside the six-yard box. Bond jumped to knock away the second header at the face of the goal. The Drexel defense quickly cleared the ball and negated the threat.
Burke gave the Dragons a second goal in the final two minutes off a cross from Snyder off a free kick on the left side. The diving ball found its way past Pratt and Burke deflected it into the net to secure the victory.
Drexel and UNC Wilmington played to a scoreless draw through the first 45 minutes, but both teams had their opportunities. The Dragons nearly got a fortuitous goal in the 11th minute when Seahawks' keeper Emily Pratt collided with a defender while vying for a bouncing ball. Freshman Daria Bialik (Woodbridge, N.J./Woodbridge) was there to collect the loose ball but as she wound up for the open-net strike, Pratt blasted the ball out of bounds while still sprawled on the ground. The Seahawks generated several scoring opportunities off set pieces in the first half, but Bond turned away four shots to keep the Dragons in the match.
UNC Wilmington outshot Drexel 17-6 in the match and edged the Dragons in corner kicks 5-4. Five of the Dragons six shots were on goal, however, and they converted one of their four corner kicks. Emily Pratt made three saves in the net for the Seahawks.
With a seven-match winless streak behind them, the Dragons will now look for their second straight conference victory at Hofstra next Friday. The match is set for 7:00 p.m. in Hempstead, N.Y.
