The Drexel women's soccer team fell to Hofstra, 1-0, on a cold, rainy night at the Hofstra Soccer Field on Friday night. The Pride broke a scoreless tie with the only goal of the game midway through the first half and held on for the victory.
Senior Brooke DeRosa had the only goal of the game for the Pride, who improved to 13-3 overall and 7-2 in the Colonial Athletic Association, while the Dragons fell to 5-8-3 overall and 1-6-2 in the CAA with the loss.
The Pride scored off a corner kick. Jess Crankshaw took the kick and found the head of freshman midfielder Tiffany Yovino 12 yards from goal. Yovino snapped a header towards net, and DeRosa was able to redirect it from inside the six-yard box into the right side of the net.
Hofstra controlled play for most of the game, outshooting Drexel 20-3, but junior goalkeeper Krystal Robens was tested twice in the second half. Moments after checking into the game for the first time, forward Kelly McNamara boomed a 35-yard strike from the left side of the field that carried on net. The ball nearly sailed over Robens' head, but she was able to retreat and punch the ball away over the end line. Forward Athena Yiantsos also had a bid to tie with a 25-yard shot with just over three-minutes to play, but Robens was able to dive to her right for a routine save.
Robens finished with three saves to pick up her seventh shutout of the year, while Kaitlin Bond had seven saves for the Dragons.
Drexel host Northeastern on Sunday afternoon at Vidas Field. Senior Day presentations will be made before the game as the Kate Hartman, Kimberly Kabernagel, Kelly McNamara, Christine Murta and Athena Yiantsos will play in their final home game.
