Harrisonburg, Va. - Junior defender Bryan Ruff connected on a corner kick served up by Anthony Bafile with less than two minutes remaining in regulation to give the Dragons a 2-1 victory in their conference opener at James Madison. The win is Drexel's second straight victory and improves the team's record to 4-2-2 on the season.
Transfer Carlos Ruthner gave the Dragons an early lead when he chipped in a shot from three yards out past the Dukes' keeper Ken Mahan. Fabio Assumpcao fed Ruthner for the tally in the 38th minute. James Madison squared the match midway through the second half when Tristan Murray drilled a goal from 10 yards out off a pass from Lucas Domgoergen on a free kick.
Cory Robertson made three saves for his second victory of the season. James Madison edged Drexel in shots 12-8 overall, but each team had three corner kicks in the second half and the Dragons made good on the scoring opportunity for their first victory ever against the Dukes.
Drexel will look to keep the ball rolling in conference play when the team takes on Virginia Commonwealth on Sunday, Oct. 7 at 2:00 p.m.
