Philadelphia, Pa. - Gabriela Marginean led the Dragons with 26 points, 15 of which came in the second half on 7-for-9 shooting, as Drexel turned around a cold-shooting opening period to defeat Philadelphia University 68-44. The teams played in front of an assembled throng of 1,500 elementary schoolers in attendance for the exhibition game on Drexel Dream Day.
Drexel used a 22-6 run to open the second half to open a 55-34 lead over the Rams. After shooting just 36 percent in the first period, the Dragons held a slight lead at the half 33-28 lead. But Marginean and Narissa Suber got the team rolling in early in the second period. Marginean hit a jumper then sandwiched a pair of layups around a Suber three-pointer and in two minutes, the Dragons had pulled out to a 42-29 lead.
Suber was the only other Dragon in double figures, with 11 points on 3-for-8 shooting from deep. Anora Suber contributed eight points off the bench, going 2-for-2 from beyond the three-point arc and at the free-throw line.
The Dragons forced the Rams into 13 second-half turnovers and allowed them to make just six of their 23 field-goal attempts. Jessica Romano led Philadelphia 17 points and nine rebounds and Ashley Webster chipped in nine points and eight boards.
The game marked the fifth time Drexel has hosted Dream Day, a community outreach effort that brings youngsters to the basketball game as part of a live skills teaching initiative. The elementary students participated in a variety of activities during and before the game designed to emphasize the RICHER principles: Respect, Integrity, Cooperation, Harmony, Excellence and Responsibility, as part of the NCAA's Stay-In-Bounds program.
Drexel opens its 2007-08 regular season on the road at Loyola (Md.) on Nov. 9, tip time is set for 7:00 p.m.
