Men's Basketball Ends 2007 With a 69-51 Loss to Saint Joseph's

Philadelphia, Pa. – Saint Joseph's shot 64 percent in the second half and defeated Drexel, 69-51, at the Palestra. The Dragons, who entered the game shooting 35 percent from long range, made just two of 20 from behind the arc as they fell to 7-6. The Hawks won their third straight game and improved to 7-4.
Drexel cut the Hawks' lead to four early in the second half when Tramayne Hawthorne (Steelton, Pa./Steelton-Highspire) hit his only three-pointer of the night to make it 30-26. Saint Joseph's answered with an 8-0 run as Pat Calathes and Tasheed Carr each had four points during the stretch. The Dragons couldn't get any closer than six points the rest of the way. While the Hawks torched the nets in the second half, Drexel struggled from the floor making just seven shots in the second half.
Drexel trailed by just five with 55 seconds to play in the half before Calathes was fouled. He sank one of two and Rob Ferguson picked up the offensive board and scored to make it an eight-point lead at the break. Both teams committed 10 turnovers in the first half.
Randy Oveneke (Antwerpen, Belgium/Saint-Anna College) led the Dragons with a career-high 18 points. Frank Elegar (Bronx, N.Y./St. Raymond's) added 17 points and eight rebounds. The senior was 6-for-6 from the floor.
Calathes led the Hawks with 20 points and 10 rebounds. He was 7-for-9 from the floor and also had five assists and three blocks. Ahmad Nivins added 13 points, while Carr and Ferguson chipped in with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
The Dragons resume the CAA portion of their schedule on Jan. 2 when they host UNC Wilmington at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. The game begins at 7 p.m. and can be seen on MASN.
