Philadelphia, Pa. – The Drexel men's and women's crew won two races against Lehigh on a cold and blustery day on the Schuylkill. The men's and women's junior varsity eights prevailed over long-time rival, Lehigh, while the men's and women's varsity eight crews finished just behind Lehigh in the 2,000 meter race down the Schuylkill.
The Dragon women started the competition by finishing second in the varsity eight race with a time of 6:53.7, which was 29 seconds faster than Lehigh's lightweight eight boat. Lehigh won the race in 6:49.3.
The following race, the men's varsity eight competition, was the tightest race of the day. There were six lead changes in the first 1,850 meters and no crew took more than a four foot lead. Lehigh made a distinctive surge in the final 150 meters to take first place by only five seats with a time of 5:41.3. Drexel was only 1.5 seconds behind (5:42.8), improving upon their 13-second loss to Lehigh two weeks ago.
Drexel notched two convincing victories in the junior varsity eight races. The women battled the 35 degree weather and 10 mile per hour winds to win their race in 7:04.4, ahead of Lehigh's crews that finished second in 7:06.5 and third in 7:16.2. The Drexel men won by a substantial margin in the junior varsity eight race, finishing in 5:57.8 and Lehigh's closest boat crossed the line in 6:02.5.
The Drexel crew will be back in action April 14, as the men travel to Marietta, Ohio and the women will compete at the Knecht Cup in Camden, N.J.
