Philadelphia – Drexel field hockey snapped a two-game losing streak as the Dragons shut out city-rival Saint Joseph's, 1-0. Sophomore Carolina Gibernau (Montevideo, Uruguay/Universidad de la Republica) scored the game's only goal to even Drexel's record to 3-3 on the season. The Hawks dropped to 1-4.
Saint Joseph's had an opportunity to tie the game after the clock showed no time remaining as the Hawks were awarded their only penalty corner of the game. Jen Wrublesky fired a shot for the home team that was turned away by Drexel goalie Colleen McAndrew (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) to preserve the victory. The shutout was the first of the season for McAndrew and eighth of her career. Drexel's offense generated 12 shots in the game but only one found its way past Saint Joseph's goalie Rebecca Cunfer. Gibernau received a penalty corner from Whitney Enck (Solanco, Pa./Solanco) and took the ball to the right and fired a shot that found the corner of the cage. The goal was Gibernau's third of the season and second game winner.
The first half featured no scoring but did have a 25 minute delay as an electrical outage halted the game. The Dragons outshot the Hawks, 12-4, and earned five penalty corners. Cunfer made seven saves for Saint Joseph's while McAndrew stopped two shots. McAndrew has now allowed just four goals over the last four games.
Drexel returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 15 when the Dragons travel to Durham, N.C. to take on No. 10 Duke. Game time is 1:00 p.m.
