Dragons Open Conference Season with Convincing Win Over Hofstra

Philadelphia - Drexel field hockey opened Colonial Athletic Association action with a 2-0 victory over visiting Hofstra at Buckley Field. The Dragons scored two goals in the game's first seven minutes and never looked back in recording their third straight conference win going back to last season. The win pushed Drexel to 5-5 (1-0 CAA) on the season while Hofstra fell to 4-5 (0-1 CAA).
The Dragons came out firing as the Drexel offense created multiple chances in the opening minutes. Hofstra was whistled for a foul just outside the arc less than five minutes into the game. Carolina Gibernau fired the ball into the arc where Amanda Kicera redirected it toward the cage. Waiting at the left post alone was senior Emily Horvat who poked into the cage. Less than two minutes later, Sarah Gostomski sent a bouncing pass into the arc. Horvat redirected the ball in front of the cage where Susan Ciufo one-timed the ball past the Hofstra goalie to double the Drexel lead. Drexel continued to put generate offensive chances the rest of the half but were unable to capitalize. At the half, Drexel led 2-0 while enjoying a 9-3 advantage in shots and a 5-0 edge in penalty corners.
The second half saw more of the same from the Dragons as Drexel continued to threaten to increase its lead. Drexel was unable to increase its lead but allowed Hofstra just two shots in the second stanza while the Dragons took nine. For the game, Drexel outshot the Pride, 18-5, and outcornered Hofstra, 7-1. Drexel goalie Colleen McAndrew stymied the few chances Hofstra mustered. The junior goalie recorded the shutout while saving three shots.
The Dragons will continue their conference schedule as they host James Madison on Friday, Sept. 28. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
