Towson, Md. – Frank Elegar (Bronx, N.Y./St. Raymond's) scored 29 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, but Towson made 10 three-pointers and defeated the Dragons, 86-77. Drexel (8-9, 1-4 CAA) trailed by just two points at the half, but Towson (6-9, 2-3 CAA) opened the second half with a 9-2 run and held off a late Dragons' rally to earn the victory.
Towson led by 16 points with just 2:16 to play in the game before the Dragons made one final push to get back in it. Drexel scored 14 of the next 16 points and after Gerald Colds (New York, N.Y./St. Raymond's) made a three-pointer, Drexel was down just 75-71 with 30 seconds left. Towson quelled the rally by making six of its final seven attempts from the free-throw line. The Tigers shot 50 percent in the game, including 53 percent in the final 20 minutes when they were 5-for-8 from behind the arc.
The Tigers seemed to be in control of the game early and had a 14-point lead at one point in the first half. However, Elegar picked up a steal and went the length of the court for a dunk. He was fouled and it was ruled intentional. The senior knocked down both free throws and then on the next possession just three second later, slammed another dunk home to cut the lead to 33-28.
Elegar scored 17 of his 29 points in the first half and finished 9-for-15 from the field. He also had two blocks, two steals and two assists without committing a turnover in 38 minutes. Elegar now has three double-doubles in his last four games and six this season. Scott Rodgers (Philadelphia, Pa./Central) added 16 points, eight rebounds and five assists.
Towson's Jonathan Pease led five Tigers in double figures with 25 points and also had 11 rebounds. Josh Thornton was 4-for-4 from deep and finished with 16 points. The Tigers were 10-for-19 from three-point territory and had 23 assists in the game, 10 from C.C. Williams.
The Dragons begin a three-game homestand on Wednesday night against Georgia State. The Dragons and Panthers will tip off at 7:30 p.m.
