Atlanta, Ga. – Tramayne Hawthorne (Steelton, Pa./Steelton-Highspire) scored 17 points, including 15 in the second half, but Georgia State held on for a 64-58 victory over the Dragons.
Hawthorne hit back-to-back three-pointers to put Drexel (9-13, 2-8) up 49-42 with just under 10 minutes to play. The Panthers (6-14, 3-7) answered with a 9-0 run. Georgia State went ahead for good as Leonard Mendez scored 10 straight points for the Panthers. His three-pointer with 5:57 to play put Georgia State up 54-53. Kevin Lott nailed a jumper for his first points of the game to increase the lead to three and the sophomore hit a running jumper to make it 58-53 with 2:37 left.
Drexel once again struggled from the line down the stretch. The Dragons made just four of nine free throws in the second half and finished the game 9-for-19 from the line. Frank Elegar (Bronx, N.Y./St. Raymond's), who was held to seven points and no rebounds, missed a pair of free throws at the three-minute mark when the Dragons trailed by just three points.
Hawthorne had five three-pointers in the second half and was the main offense for the Dragons. Scott Rodgers (Philadelphia, Pa./Central) added 11 points but was just 4-for-14 from the floor. Yannick Formbor (Roselle, N.J./St. Patrick's) was a bright spot off the bench. He scored four points, grabbed five rebounds and played solid interior defense.
Georgia State took a 28-23 lead at halftime. Mendez had 11 points in the half, including three three-pointers. Drexel played the last 10 minutes of the half without Elegar, who picked up two fouls.
The Dragons return to Philadelphia for a three-game homestand beginning on Saturday. Drexel will host Northeastern in the Daskalakis Center at 5 p.m. in a game that can be seen on CN8.
