Philadelphia, Pa.—Tramayne Hawthorne and Scott Rodgers each scored 13 points as Drexel defeated Penn, 66-64, at the Daskalakis Athletic Center on Tuesday morning. It was the Dragons' first game of the season and marked the first time the Quakers ever played at the DAC.
Penn (0-2) had a chance to tie the game in the final seconds. Drexel missed three of four foul shots down the stretch and led 66-63 as Penn got possession with 13 seconds to play. Freshman Zack Rosen drew a foul on Drexel's Hawthorne as he launched a three-pointer. Rosen went to the line, but missed the first of his three attempts. He made the second and missed the third intentionally. Penn got possession but Brennan Votel's short jumper would not fall as Drexel escaped with the victory.
Drexel led by as many as 14 points in the first half before the Quakers chipped away and cut the deficit to seven at the half. Gerald Colds and Hawthorne each had eight points and a pair of three-pointers in the first 20 minutes.
Freshman Samme Givens had a solid outing in his first collegiate game. Givens had a game-high 10 rebounds, including five on the offensive end. Sophomore Jamie Harris added nine points, six rebounds and four assists. Kevin Egee led the Quakers with 18 points. Votel added 17 and had a team-high nine rebounds. Rosen had eight assists and did not commit a turnover. Both teams had their issues from the free throw line. Penn made just 13 of 28 from the line, while Drexel was only 17 for 32.
The game began at 10 a.m. and was shown live on ESPN as part of the network's college hoops marathon.
The Dragons are off until Saturday, when they travel to Washington, D.C. to face Georgetown.
