
Dragons Drop Three at Northeast Duals

Troy, N.Y. - The Drexel wrestling team lost three duals at the prestigious Brute Journeyman Northeast Duals hosted by Hudson Valley Community College. Drexel lost to Central Michigan, 27-10, and fell to Maryland, 35-7. The Dragons also dropped a 24-13 decision to Appalachian State. Senior Jon Oplinger was the lone Drexel wrestler who won two matches on the day as the 197-pounder picked up a pair of major decision victories.
The Dragons won a pair of matches against Maryland as Matt Dugan took a major decision win over Dex Lederer, 18-6. At 184 pounds, Justin Wieller outpointed Christopher Lloyd, 8-2. Against Appalachian State, the Dragons were victorious in four bouts. Billy Haydt earned a 7-4 decision over William Houghton, 7-4 while at 165 pounds Scott Hunter won a 4-1 overtime victory over Kyle Blevins. Oplinger earned Drexel four team points with a 14-3 major decision victory over David Pritz at 197 pounds. Heavyweight Kyle Frey pulled away for a 10-3 win over Dustin Heiser. Three Drexel wrestlers won matches against Central Michigan including freshman Robert Robinson's 2-1 triumph at 149 pounds over Ryan Cubberly. At 157 pounds, Dan Konno took a 9-7 overtime win over James Puckett while Oplinger earned another major decision win with a 9-1 drubbing of Eric Simaz.
The Dragons were hampered as a team by the absence of injured senior Steve Mytych. The three-time NCAA qualifier at 125 pounds was out with an injury as the Dragons forfeited all three of their 125-pound matches on the day to give their opponents six points in each match.
