Fairfield Gets Past Drexel, 66-60

Bridgeport, Conn. – Fairfield caused a late Drexel turnover and made five of six free throws in the final 30 seconds to defeat the Dragons, 66-60, at the Arena at Harbor Yards in Bridgeport, Conn.
Drexel (2-3) trailed by five with just over two minutes to play, but cut the lead to one after a bucket by Scott Rodgers and a lay-up by Evan Neisler with 32 seconds remaining. Fairfield (8-3) was able to get the ball in and the Dragons fouled Jonathan Han, who sank both of his free throws, to give the Stags a 63-60 lead. Drexel came up court and set up a play, but Fairfield's Warren Edney came up with a steal, was fouled immediately and sank a pair of free throws to extend the lead to five.
The Dragons grabbed 22 offensive rebounds and committed just five turnovers. However, they continued to struggle from the floor and shot just 32 percent in the game. The Dragons made just four of their 20 attempts from long range in the contest and finished 6-for-13 from the line.
Scott Rodgers and Gerald Colds led Drexel with 12 points, while Jamie Harris added 11. Samme Givens came off the bench and grabbed 11 rebounds, including seven on the offensive end. Evan Neisler had 10 boards, which gave him two straight games with 10 or more caroms.
The Stags, who never trailed in the game, won their seventh straight game. Anthony Johnson led the team with 14 points and 16 rebounds. He was one of four players to score in double figures for Fairfield. Han added 12 points and seven assists.
The Dragons return home to face Niagara University on Dec. 18. It will be the Dragons last home game until Jan. 8 when VCU visits the Daskalakis Athletic Center for a 7 p.m. game. Drexel will have six straight road games between the Niagara and VCU games.
