Washington, D.C. – Drexel sophomore Becca Drylie-Perkins (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) scored with just 1:40 remaining to halt a 4-0 American run as the Dragons hung on to defeat the Eagles, 8-6. Jessica Bill (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Baldwinsville) scored two goals and added an assist while goalie Lauren LaBella stopped 11 shots. The win moved Drexel to 2-0 on the season while American dropped to 0-2.
With the Dragons ahead 7-2 with just over 11 minutes remaining, American mounted a furious comeback that started with a pair of Jackie Lane goals. Brittany Finnegan and Lauren Lane each added a goal minutes later as the Eagles drew to within 7-6 with 3:28 to go. But with less than two minutes left, Drylie-Perkins took a Katie Bradley pass and beat goalie Kristine Vida to give the Dragons a two-goal edge.
Drexel broke out to a 2-0 lead on goals by Kaitlin Keegan (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) and Katie Lawson (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township) before American got on the board with Lane's first of her three goals. The Dragons responded with a goal from freshman Sam Berger (Palmyra, N.J./Holy Cross) just 42 seconds later. Bill scored on a free-position shot as the Dragons went into intermission with a 4-1 lead. Bill and Gwenna Johnson (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) started the second half with goals before the teams traded tallies to make the score, 7-2.
In front of LaBella, the Dragons' defense was led by senior captain Maura Cullen (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) who recorded team-highs with six caused turnovers and four groundballs. Along with her 11 saves, LaBella allowed just one goal on a free-position shot in six American attempts as she lowered her goals against average to 8.00 on the season. For the game, Drexel outshot the Eagles, 24-21 and held a 15-14 edge in groundballs.
The Dragons return to the field on Sunday, Feb. 24 for their home-opener as University City rival Penn visits Vidas Field. Game time is 1:00 p.m.
