Philadelphia – Dan Layfield (Lima, N.,Y./Honeoye Falls) scored the game-winning goal with 4:25 to play as No. 18 Drexel overcame a three-goal deficit in the fourth quarter to defeat Penn, 9-8, at Franklin Field on Saturday afternoon. The Dragons trailed 8-5 with less than nine minutes to play but scored four straight goals to defeat the Quakers.
Penn took the three goal lead when Al Kohart scored an unassisted goal at the 11:15 mark of the fourth period. The Dragons started their comeback when Kevin Dart (Farifax, Va./Robinson) set up Brian Neary (Oreland, Pa./La Salle) for his first goal of the season at 8:35. Less than a minute and a half later, Colin Ambler (Abington, Pa./Abington) made it a one-goal game with his only goal of the game. Eleven seconds later, at the 6:58 mark, Penn's Brett Hughes was called for an illegal body check which gave Drexel the extra-man advantage. The Dragons responded when Kevin Stockel (North Salem, N.Y./John Jay) found the back of the cage with 6:29 to tie it. Adam Dennis (Fairfax, Va./DeMatha) was credited with an assist and the sophomore picked up another assist just minutes later when he set up Layfield's game-winner.
The Quakers, who trailed early after L.C. Moerschel (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) scored the first goal of the game for the Dragons, scored three straight goals to take a 3-1 lead early in the second period. Dennis cut the lead to 3-2, but Penn answered with the final goal of the half and opened the third with a J.J. Lian goal to go ahead 5-2. Each team alternated scoring for the next six goals as Penn held at least a two-goal lead until the Dragons rallied late.
Dennis had four points to lead the Dragons. Neary scored a pair of goals, while Ambler, Stockel and O'Connor (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) each contributed a goal and an assist.
Penn outshot Drexel, 43-22, as the Dragons committed 23 turnovers in the game. The teams split the 20 face-offs that were taken. Bruce Bickford (Providence, R.I./Moses Brown) made 11 saves for Drexel, including three in the final quarter as the Dragons scrapped to get back in the game. Chris Casey had seven stops for the Quakers. Craig Andrzejewski led Penn with three assists. Corey Winkoff, Lian and Al Kohart each scored twice.
Drexel will return to Vidas Field on Tuesday, when it hosts Lehigh in a non-conference game which begins at 4 p.m.
