
Drexel Snaps Losing Skid with 65-51 Victory Against Towson

Philadelphia, Pa. – Four Dragons scored in double figures as Drexel defeated Towson, 65-51, at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. Drexel built an 18-point lead midway through the first half and held on to secure the victory. Tramayne Hawthorne, Frank Elegar and Scott Rodgers all contributed 13 points for the Dragons (10-15, 3-10). (9-14, 5-8).
The Dragons, who snapped a six-game losing streak, used a 13-0 run to race out to a 25-7 lead with 9:42 remaining in the first half. Drexel scored 11 points off of nine Towson turnovers in the opening stanza while holding the Tigers to under 38 percent shooting from the field. Drexel shot over 52 percent from the field to take a 37-24 lead at the break.
Towson scored the first four points of the second half on a pair of Tony Durant baskets to cut the Drexel lead to nine, but the Tigers would get no closer the rest of the way. Hawthorne connected on three of his four three-point attempts while Elegar came off the bench to score 13 points and pull down 8 rebounds. With his first field goal of the game, Elegar recorded his 1,200th career point. He is currently 18th all-time at Drexel with 1,211 career points. Rob Hampton added 11 points for the Dragons while Randy Oveneke chipped in with eight points and eight rebounds, including four on the offensive end.
Towson shot just 27 percent in the second half and converted just eight field goals in the period. Jonathan Pease and Durant each scored 12 points to pace the Tigers. Towson converted just one of its nine three-point attempts in the second half.
The Dragons will not play again at the Daskalakis Athletic Center until Feb. 23. They begin a three- game road trip on Thursday at Old Dominion. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. and the game can be seen live on ESPNU.
