Philadelphia - Drexel's all-time leading three-point shooter Narissa Suber's shot from the field was less than her normal accuracy, but she found the mark from the free-throw line just in time to give the Dragons (17-11, 12-5 CAA) a 62-58 come-from-behind victory over George Mason (9-19, 3-14). Suber was a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe and she knocked down two with 8.7 seconds left in the game to give the Dragons a four-point cushion and the victory on Senior Day. Freshman Jasmina Rosseel scored a career-high 18 points off the bench. Gabriela Marginean followed up her career-high 28-point performance against Towson with a game high 26 points, including eight straight that helped bring the Dragons from behind in the second half.
Drexel trailed by as much as 11 points in the second half but a pair of three-pointers by Anora Suber spurred a 16-5 run that knotted the score at 43 apiece on a layup by Rosseel with 9:53 left in the game. Rosseel also drilled two three-pointers during the spurt. The teams traded baskets after tying the game before Marginean reeled off eight straight points to give the Dragons a 54-48 lead on a driving layup at the 6:44 mark. Minutes later Marginean would knock down a pair of free-throws to keep the team on top 60-54 with 1:52 in the game.
But after a jumper by Brittany Eley cut the lead to four, Marginean fouled out after turning the ball over with 27 seconds left. Eugenia Broadus knocked down both of the ensuing free throws to make it a 60-58 game. A Drexel turnover on the inbounds pass gave Mason the ball with 25 seconds left. But the Dragons tough defense forced Moni Akintunde to travel while driving to her left, giving the Dragons the ball with 10 seconds on the clock. Suber received the inbounds pass, drew the foul and knocked down the free tosses to win the game.
The Dragons' victory is the team's 12th in CAA play, tying the 2004-05 team for the most wins in conference play. Rosseel's 18 points matches her career high which was set against James Madison on Feb. 17. She also pulled down a career-high seven rebounds and dished out three assists. Marginean grabbed six boards to go with her 26 points and led the team with three steals.
Drexel battled with cold-shooting in the first half and the team's 11-point deficit is the largest overcome by the Dragons in a victory this season. The win keeps the Dragons in a third-place tie in CAA play with Virginia Commonwealth. Drexel closes out the regular season on the road at Georgia State on March 6.
